Playing music in a dark night.
“Ian” graphics is dedicated by author to Ian Andersen from Jethro Tull group and he seems to be the main character of it. Is it for sure? It can be a mysterious Gipsy fluting his sad songs as well or a pirate in a typical scarf knotted on his head, celebrating his success lonely, only with a bottle of liquor. All depend on our look and our interpretation.
Mysterious man playing his enigmatic melodies…there is big loneliness emanate from the graphics – one glass near the bottle proves that there aren’t any other companions to feast with. That alienated ceremony is interrupted by appearance of birds, which are probably lured by music. Is it attracting them or disturb – it’s hard to tell by their widened nails and open beaks: are they singing or maybe croaking at disturbing their peace player.
Graphics made by original technique: black ink and art paper looks quite dark and gloomy, emanates mysterious atmosphere. Is it evening or daybreak? The musician prevents birds going to sleep or is he waiting them too early? That piece of art causes many questions in us. That picturesque and shadowy aura of work seems to be its biggest advantage. Graphics tell us the story and we are letting it involve us into that extraordinary tale. Secret, fuzzy contours of character’s body increase the mythical atmosphere. A shoulder, which is peck by birds should symbolize lazy, sleepy move of a hand playing melody on flute or maybe it’s an occult power just with other fuzzy contour on his back. Maybe that haze surrounds him to pull out the instrument and put him to bed? But maybe it’s an inspiration which came to him with a little help from alcohol from a bottle. Has it appeared suddenly from the fireplace or gate placed in a background or maybe crawled lazy after bird flow down?
A key to that work is not only a character of musician with a black bracelet on his wrist, but mostly an uncommon, mystic climate. The graphics has maybe small measurement but it contents big essence. Restriction colors only to black and white gives it an effect of classical beauty, of understatement. Full colors would be too literal in that case.
It looks just a little like sketch made by a fan for his idol, but in here we have whole scenery. Ian’s character isn’t so unequivocal as well – if there weren’t any dedication, how many of us would guess who is that man in the center of work, placed comfortably on a big chair, which capitulate under his power and his music.
The work gains the attention, we search for meanings, make our own legend suits that mythic picture given us by author. He painted a part of a story, while we have to figure out the beginning and the end. The graphics curry us away just like a game with convention, with atmosphere, with characters - the imagination game, in which the rules are obvious: the more we let been curried, the more we’ll win. The real beauty of that picture we will find just when we would feel the spirit of it.
